New Property Owners:
If you bought your property after April, the closing company should have explained that taxes were prorated at the closing. The current tax bill will NOT be in your name because you did not own the property as of April 1. It is a good idea to call or come to city hall and ask for a copy of the current tax bill.
Property Sellers:
If you sold your house, but owned it on April 1, you are still responsible for the commitment of taxes. It is your responsibility to make sure the bill is forwarded to the new owner. If a lien is placed on the home, it will be in the name on the commitment regardless of when the house sold.
Did you know that once you own your home for twelve consecutive months you are eligible for the Homestead Exemption? The exemption provides a reduction of up to $25,000 in the value of your home for property tax purposes. One approved, it remains in effect as long as your ownership and residency status does not change. Application and more details.
