Dig Safe

In Maine, anyone using power tools to penetrate the ground (including homeowners) is required to notify DigSafe at 811 or 1-888-DIGSAFE at least 3 business days prior to digging.

DigSafe will then notify the owners of underground facilities that are members of that system. However, not all owners of underground facilities are required to be members of the DigSafe system.

It is also required to notify all non-member owners of underground facilities in the area of the excavation 3 business days prior to digging, as some underground facilities may be private. This includes the Gardiner Water District and the City of Gardiner Wastewater Treatment Department.

As a resource to assist you with identifying how to contact non-member facility operators that may own or operate underground facilities within your pre-marked area of excavation, the Maine Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) has developed a directory of non-member facility operators.

Please be aware, that this is not an all-inclusive list of non-members. There may be other non-member facility owners that you are required to notify that are not included here – especially private property owners.
